Michèle Orban has just won the championship in the Total League with Dudelange and celebrated the end of her basketball career. However, she is part of the women`s roster for the FIBA women’s European Championship 2021 in Cyprus (July 20-25), those games will definitely be her last games as a basketball player.
Orban is one of many experienced players in the national team and it is clear that there will come a point in the future where the next generation will take over. Asked about her last games as a basketball player that will be coming up in 2 weeks, Orban says that she „is happy to be a part of team Luxembourg and that her career will continue and end with the national team. Playing for Luxembourg has been a big part for me as a player over a long period of my life. It is also great to play one more time with some of our more experienced players (laughs) and the upcoming young players. We have a dynamic team with a lot of talent on our team and that is why I am looking forward to playing this competition even more. »
Once Orban and other experienced players will end their career, younger players are ready to take over which is a great sign for Orban: „The fact that we have a lot of talented young players means a lot. We are on a great way as many players are taking the challenge to play abroad, some of them play and study in the USA or they even play professional basketball, this is something that has clearly changed over the last years, the players have the confidence to take on a challenge. This team has the chance to play on a good level and have success over the next years, even if players like myself retire (laughs). I will definitely support the team from the sidelines in the future.“
