AB Contern will continue to play in the LBBL. In the promotion and relegation series, Contern was able to beat Mondorf 2:0. On Saturday, Contern won its home game 95:94 after an incredible double overtime finish, the first game in Mondorf ended with a 93:77 win by Contern.
Contern had a 6-12 point lead for nearly the entire game, Mondorf was able to come in striking distance multiple times but Contern always had an answer to stop the runs by the team of the National 2. However, just 3 and a half minutes before the end of the game, Mondorf came as close as 3 points (70:67 in favor of Contern) and Contern was forced to react. After another 3-pointer by Small, the lead was cut to 1 point (71:70). Ross had the chance to give Mondorf the lead but missed both free-throws and on the other end, Diarra hit a 3-pointer to give his team the lead. In a crazy final sequence of regulation, Khalil Small hit an incredible 3-pointer to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, Bob Hemmen hit a key 3-pointer to give Mondorf a 3-point lead (video). Contern tied the game with a 3-pointer by Diarra before Ross hit the shot of the season … a full court buzzer beater … but his coach called a timeout before so that Mondorf received the ball on an inbound play, this time Ross could not hit a fade-away and the game went into a second overtime.
In the second overtime, Mondorf was down by 6 points with 42 seconds remaining but fought back once again .. but Contern was able to finally put an end to this amazing game.
King had a team-high 40 points and Nicolas Hittelet added 19 points to lead Contern to this big victory.
Racing Luxembourg and Telstar Hesperange have relegated to the National 2 while Gréngewald Hueschtert and AS Zolwer have promoted to the LBBL this season.
