15:00 T71 Dudelange – Gréngewald Hueschtert
17:30 T71 Dudelange – Basket Esch
In the women’s semi finals, it is the matchup between the two teams that participated in the EuroCup competition this season. T71 and Gréngewald have had a long and difficult schedule this season with at least 6 international games during the weeks. Now, it is time for a real showdown at the Coque between the teams. Gréngewald has become better and better over the last weeks, the addition of Lauren Van Kleunen has given the team extra quality and with Lisy Hetting returning to the lineup, the team could be at its best for this important game. T71 has had injury problems over the last weeks: Catherine Mreches, Shalonda Winton and lately Michelle Dittgen have missed games, the clubs announced that all 3 of them will miss this game and it will be interesting to see how strong the team can play in a decisive game. The first matchup between both teams this season ended with a 88:73 for T71 on the road in a late October game while Gréngewald clearly beat T71 81:53 in Dudelange in early January. It was the only loss for T71 this entire LBBL season as the team of coach Jérôme Altmann has a record of 13 wins and 1 loss. Gréngewald has the second best record in the women’s LBBL with 13 wins and only 2 losses. This game has the potential to become a real thriller on a Sunday afternoon.
In the men’s semi finals, the derby of the South is scheduled between T71 Dudelange and Basket Esch. The current cup winner Esch needs to win against its rival in order to have a chance at defending its title. In the league championship, both teams have the exact same record and are on top of the league with 13 wins and 4 losses. Their first matchup was a defensive battle in a late October game and ended with a 62:58 win for Basket Esch. The team of coach Franck Mériguet had to play without Clancy Rugg over the last two weeks as the national team player suffered a foot injury after the restart in early January. Both teams have plenty of quality in their roster. Thomas Grün (Esch) and Joe Kalmes (T71) are in the top 5 in the JICL MVP race and both teams usually rotate 3 professional players with 2 being on the court at the same time. It is likely that it will come down to little details to determine the winner of this game.
