Interview with national team head coach Mariusz Dziurdzia

Our women’s national team will be in action next Thursday and Sunday in the Eurobasket 2023 Qualifiers. On Thursday, our women will play against Switzerland in the Coque at Kirchberg at 19:00!

National team head coach Mariusz Dziurdzia is optimistic that our team can grab a win in this qualification campaign and he notes that the support of the fans in the gym might become a very important factor.

How is the preparation going on for your team?
Our (professional) players abroad (Magaly, Lisa, Estelle) arrive on Sunday/Monday, we can then practice with our full roster after we have already practiced a full week with the team. All players are extremely motivated and is a pleasure to work with this team. The atmosphere in the team is exceptional, the young players are already integrated and you can feel that the women are looking forward to playing these games.

What will be possible against Switzerland?
We have to say that some of our key players are missing because they are playing in the USA and will not be available (Anne Simon, Svenia Nurenberg, Julija Vujakovic). However our goal is to win at least one game in this qualification and the home game against Switzerland is a great opportunity to reach this goal. We know that the challenge is difficult but our young players are on the same page and they will be ready to take over a big role even if some of them do not have have a lot of experience on this level. Players like Mandy Geniets for example will play a very important role. Some of our young players will now get the chance to show their abilities, this is the first step in the generational change in our national team because multiple players have ended their career.

You will have a home game in the Coque on Thursday, what will be important to show a good game?
Obviously we have to play our best basketball in order to have a chance to win against Switzerland. Our team is extremely motivated. Hopefully, a lot of spectators will come to the gym to give us extra energy. This factor can become very important, the people in a gym are able to encourage the players and help them to play even better. Our women have played a fantastic tournament last summer and won the Gold medal, they deserve to have a crowd cheering for them.
