Luxembourg loses in Montenegro and finishes group in 3rd place

On Sunday afternoon, the women’s national team played the sixth and final game of the FIBA 2025 Eurobasket qualifiers.

On the road in Montenegro, Luxembourg had the chance to write Luxembourgish sports history. In the end, it was a bitter defeat and Luxembourg misses a historical opportunity by finishing the group in third place after a 33-point loss.

The game started with a 10:0 run by Montenegro, the hosts led 31:12 after the first quarter. Luxembourg needed some time to adjust to the playing style by the opponent but Meynadier and her teammates reacted with a strong second quarter to cut the opponent’s lead before the break. Montenegro led 37:26 after 20 minutes. At the same time, Switzerland had a big lead over Bosnia at the break so that it was clear what scenario would be relevant. Luxembourg would need a victory or a loss by less than 11 points in the second half to finish the group in first place.

However, Montenegro was too strong in the second half and managed to win the game by 33 points in the end (86:53). In a 3-team-tie scenario on top of group H, Luxembourg takes the 3rd place behind Montenegro and Switzerland.

Amanda Cahill led Luxembourg with 13 points, Anne Simon and Magaly Meynadier scored 10 points each.

All in all, our women have played an amazing qualification – congratulations to the team and staff!
