Luxembourg’s comeback falls short in front a sold out crowd

On Sunday afternoon, Luxembourg’s men’s national team played against Romania at the Coque in Kirchberg. It was the third game of the 2027 World Cup pre-qualifiers.

Luxembourg stormed back late in the game but could not turn the game around, the final score was 78:84 in favor of the guests in front of a sold out crowd and 1621 spectators.

Starting 5: Rugg, Grün, Laurent, Kovac, Kreps

The guest had a strong start and jumped out to a 12:0 lead. Luxembourg did not have the necessary shooting touch in the first half (1/10 threes) to get closer into the game, Romania led 46:31 at the break.

After the break, Luxembourg had a strong run to cut the deficit to only 4 points (44:48) after a long 3-pointer by Ben Kovac (video). Romania took back control of the game and had a 16-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Luxembourg showed an amazing reaction and fighting spirit in the last minutes of the game and cut the lead to only 4 points with 3 minutes remaining. In the end, Romania had the better finish to win the game and the direct comparison.
