On Thursday-evening, our women’s national team played the first game of the FIBA 2023 Eurobasket qualifiers. At home, our women played a great first half but the guests turned the game around in the second half and finally won 58:54.

Luxembourg had a great start into the game and led 9:0 after 3 minutes behind 2 « 3-pointers » by Esmeralda Skrijelj (video). Switzerland reacted and came back into the game but our national team led 17:12 after the first quarter.
Our ladies played strong on the defensive end not allowing the guests to get into a rhythm. Despite some missed shots on offense, the lead was growing until halftime and Nadia Mossong hit a great shot to end the first 20 minutes (video).
After the break, Herminjard (Switzerland) showed her abilities and brougth the guests back into the game, Switzerland even took the lead late in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the guests were able to take a 6-point lead with 5 minutes remaining and Luxembourg was under pressure. On offense, the team had too many turnovers to turn the game around.
Herminjard was unstoppable and finished the game with a game-high 29 points.
After the game, Tessy Hetting, Michèle Orban and Laure Diederich, 3 players that were part of the women’s national team for many years, were honored for their years in the women’s team! Team manager Blanche Vonckel was also honored.
