The second round of the regular season has been played in the men’s National 2.
Black Star Mersch earned a third victory this season behind Gordon’s 41 points against Mamer. In the 87:73 win, Morris added 26 points for the guests that will try everything they can to avoid relegation to the third league in the second half of the season. For Mamer (1:13 record), the chances remain only theoretical to avoid relegation.
Mondorf has been a positive surprise so far this season. The team of coach Philip Dejworek stands on 3rd place in the standings after two rounds, good enough to play for the promotion against the third last placed team from the LBBL at the end of the season. However, there is still a long way to go. In Mondorf’s 103:87 victory over Kordall, Small went off for a weekend-high 43 points while Bartholomey (16) and Fassotte (14) had strong games as well. The Kordall Steelers remain in the race for the top places, but they have not been consistent, especially over the last weeks. After 2 rounds, they are tied with Zolwer at 4th place in the standings.
Gréngewald stays on top of the league to enter the winter break. After several years where the club has been trying to make a push to promote to the first league with the men’s team, this year’s chances are now very realistically. A strong 12:2 record is a big first step towards promotion. This weekend, the greens won the top game against Bascharage, 81:73 on the road. With a total of 12 made shots from outside the arc, Gréngewald was able to overcome 33 points by Scott Morton who stepped up in the absence of Logins. Ted Schleimer (17 points) and Luc Breuskin (14) have been a hot shooting duo for Gréngewald over the last weeks. Bascharage remains in a strong position in the standings as the number two team in the league, they have clearly underlined their ambitions to promote so far.
On Sunday, AS Zolwer continued its strong run by beating BC Mess 93:78. While the US-duo Jenkins (29 points) and Council (26) was unstoppable, Vic Heuschling and Vincent Sunnen both scored 12 points to help secure this victory. After a slow start into the season, Zolwer is now back in touch with the top teams with a record of 8:6 after 14 games. BC Mess (5:9) will have a very difficult challenge in 2022 to reach the top 3 places in the standings.
Standings after 2 rounds:
1. Gréngewald (12:2) – 26 points
2. Bascharage (10:4) – 24 points
3. Mondorf (9:5) – 23 points
4. Zolwer (8:6) – 22 points
4. Kordall (8:6) – 22 points
6. BC Mess (5:9) – 19 points
7. Black Star (3:11) – 17 points
8. Mamer (1:13) – 15 points
All teams will play against each other 4 times in total. The first two teams promote, the last 2 teams relegate. The third placed team will have a chance to promote in a best-of-5 promotion series against the third last placed team from the LBBL.
