A very exciting weekend is ahead of us!
In the women’s Total League, a simple glance at the standings reveals how the top teams play on the same (or at least a very similar) level. In the play-off-race, leader Gréngewald (27 points, already qualified) looks down at 5 (!) teams that have 26 points: Amicale, Etzella, Basket Esch, T71, Musel Pikes. With 25 points, Résidence is one point behind a play-off-spot.
Résidence Walfer’s situation is not as bad as it looks …
Résidence only trails by 1 point and on Friday they will play against the Musel Pikes. After 6 victories in a row, the team from Walferdange certainly has a lot of self-confidence to get another win … and they can build on their fans as they have 2 home-games remaining. They lost the first game against the Pikes 58:83 so in any case Résidence should try to win this game with a big advantage.
If Résidence loses this game against the Pikes, they are not eliminated yet. In fact, Résidence earns all the tie-breakers against the other opponents! (Contern, T71, Etzella, Basket Esch) which could be a huge bonus on Sunday if it comes to a tie-situation. Since multiple opponents will play against each other (Esch – Etzella / Contern – T71) the decision will definitely not fall on Friday-evening!
On Sunday, Résidence will play against Gréngewald, which is clearly a difficult game. However, Gréngewald could slow down and charge their batteries a little before the play-offs.
Who can qualify on Friday?
–> The Musel Pikes can qualify with a win against Résidence!
–> If Résidence loses its game, Basket Esch, T71, Etzella and Amicale have a chance to qualify if they win their game!
–> Résidence could qualify for the play-offs on Friday if the team beats the Musel Pikes by 26 points (this would mean that Walfer wins the direct comparison) and at the same time T71 loses against Contern. In this special case, Résidence, T71 and the Musel Pikes would be tied in the standings with 27 points each and because T71 and the Musel Pikes play against each other on Sunday, one of those teams could not pass Résidence anymore (Résidence earns the direct comparison against T71). This scenario is only possible if there is no mutli-team-tie.
Potential multi-team-tie on Sunday?
A possible scenario could be that multiple teams will be tied in the standings after Sunday’s games. In such a scenario, the direct comparison between the concerned teams and the scores of these respective games against each other will provide the final decision.
